CLEMSON, SC - The Clemson men's track and field team competed in the inaugural event of the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Facility on Friday evening. The Tigers advanced six to Saturday's finals in day one competition of the 2003 Clemson Opener. Winthrop's distance medley relay team as well as unattached weight thrower Bert Sorin set new Clemson indoor records at Saturday's meet.
60m Dash
Clemson's Larry Griffin led all finals qualifiers and four Tiger qualifiers in the 60m dash with a time of 6.77. Cory Kook, one of three unattached runners to advance to Saturday's finals, recorded a time of 6.82. The Tigers' George Kitchens and Ronald Richards advanced with times of 6.84 and 6.85, respectively. Jordan Vaden and Cory Bridges, both unattached, ran times of 6.86 and 6.88 to advance. Charlotte's Cory Bridges recorded a 6.88, and Clemson's Michael Bolling clocked a 6.92 to advance to Saturday's finals.
60m Hurdles
Clemson freshman Lydell Perry and Tennessee's Aries Merritt were the top finishers in the 60m hurdles trials with a time of 8.05. Clemson's Roy Cheney and Savannah State's Aaron Whitley posted a time of 8.15 to advance to Saturday's finals, while Javonie Small of Morehouse advanced in 8.17. Ryan Keziah, an unattached runner, completed the race in 8.21. South Carolina State's DeShawn Gregg and Savannah State's Eric Keddo also advanced to the finals with times of 8.22 and 8.23, respectively.
Distance Medley Relay
The distance medley relay team from Winthrop set the new Clemson Indoor record with a time of 10:24.84. Morehouse finished second in 10:27.24, and Clemson's team of Mike Foley, Warren Eure, Marquis Andrews and Eric Soder took third with a time of 10:31.91. North Carolina Central placed fourth in 10:50.51, and Savannah State rounded out the field with a time of 10:51.35.

Weight Throw
In the weight throw, three unattached athletes took the top spots, led by Bert Sorin's record-setting throw of 68'10" (20.98m). Florida State's Andrew Diakos was the top collegiate finisher with a mark of 55'9.25" (17.00m), followed by Clemson's Danny Alge who threw 55'5.75" (16.91m) in his first collegiate meet. Tennessee's Jim Sexton rounded out the top three collegiate throwers with a mark of 55'4.75" (16.88m). Fellow Tigers Derek Gilson and Matt Lombardi took sixth and seventh among collegiate competitors with marks of 52'0.5" and 50'6", respectively.
