Gregg Whitis recently completed his second season with the Tiger volleyball program in 2004. Whitis is responsible for the middle hitters and continues to have a major impact on the team's scouting and recruiting efforts. He also had a direct impact on the play of middle hitter Lori Ashton, an AVCA All-Region performer in 2003 and 2004.
Whitis has made a reputation at Clemson as a top recruiter. In 2003 and 2004, he helped the Tigers sign six players that contributed mightily to the success of last year's team (Sue Eckman, Leslie Mansfield, Meg Steiner, Courtney Lawrence, Brittany Ross, and Anna Vallinch). He also helped bring in Jeanette Abbott and Danielle Hepburn, two highly-regarded recruits, for next year's class.
Whitis came to Clemson from Southern Methodist University, where he was an assistant from 2001-02. While at SMU he coached three All-WAC selections, including the first All-WAC middle blocker in SMU history and the first back-to-back All-WAC selection in SMU history.
Whitis began his coaching career at Indiana State University where he served as a graduate assistant coach from July 1995 to May 1997. He was named the head coach of Kankakee Community College in 1997 where he remained until May 1998. Whitis left Kankakee Community College to become the recruiting coordinator at South Dakota State University, where he recruited and trained All-Region and All-American athletes. The Jackrabbits were participants in the 1998 NCAA Division II Tournament, falling in region play.
After serving as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of South Carolina for the 1999 season, Whitis was named an assistant at Northern Michigan University where he served as the Wildcats' recruiting coordinator and trained the outside hitters. The Wildcats were participants in the NCAA Division II Tournament during the 2000 season.
The Bourbonnais, IL native earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Education from Olivet Nazarene in 1991. Whitis served as a high school English teacher from August 1991 to June 1995. While at St. Anthony High School in Effingham, IL, he coached all levels of the volleyball program (7th, 8th, 9th, JV and Varsity). Whitis played for Neris Volleyball Club and participated in the Prairie State Games from 1985-87.
